Over the past few weeks, hundreds of NFL players have taken a knee during the national anthem to protest against President Donald Trump and racial inequality. Since then, ratings for the NFL have plummeted as patriots all over the U.S. have chosen to turn off their televisions rather than watch the American flag get disrespected.
Now, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has finally had enough.
ESPN reported that Goodell just sent out a letter to NFL players in which he made it clear that he wants them to stand for the anthem. Though he did not elaborate on his plans to insure that they stand, he wrote that it would “include such elements as an in-season platform to promote the work of our players on these core issues.”
Goodell wrote that his main goal is to end the controversy by agreeing on a uniform approach for all teams.
“Like many of our fans,” Goodell wrote, “we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us.
“We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues,” he added. “The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players.”
