Over the past week, numerous rape and sexual harassment allegations have come to light against Hollywood mogul and top Democrat donor Harvey Weinstein.
Weinstein had been a close personal friend of Barack Obama, who came under fire for waiting five days to respond to the allegations. The former president finally broke his silence on Tuesday, but what he had to say has only served to get him into deeper trouble…
Daily Mail reported that though Obama slammed Weinstein on behalf of himself and his wife Michelle, he did not take responsibility for putting his teenage daughter Malia in danger by forcing her to intern for the Hollywood producer last year despite rumors of his sexual misconduct. In addition, Obama would not discuss whether he would return the $680,000 that Weinstein raised for his 2012 re-election campaign, or the millions he collected during $32,400-per plate fundraising dinners at his New York and California homes.
“Michelle and I have been disgusted by the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein,” Obama said in his statement. “Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable, regardless of wealth or status.”
“We should celebrate the courage of women who have come forward to tell these painful stories,” the former president continued. “And we all need to build a culture – including by empowering our girls and teaching our boys decency and respect – so we can make such behavior less prevalent in the future.”
Weinstein visited Obama at his White House a staggering 13 times during his presidency, and it is thought that the former president had his daughter Malia intern for him as a “thank you” for the money he raised for him. Clearly, Obama cares more about filling his own pocket and increasing his Hollywood capital than he does about his own daughter’s safety.
