Kelsie Skillen was just 18 years-old when she had one of the worst days of her life that saw her being brutally beaten by her now ex-boyfriend James McCourt for four hours. Skillen was able to survive the assault and put her ex-boyfriend behind bars, but what caused him to attack her is downright disturbing.
McCourt reportedly beat Skillen after finding out that she may have left his jacket and cigarettes (in the jacket) somewhere when they came home from a night out. He blamed her for using his cigarettes, which caused him to start beating her.
The BBC reported that McCourt told a terrified Skillen that “you’re going to have a bruised face tomorrow so I better do it right” and then he spit on her and dumped water on her too. Placing his knees on her chest, he pummeled her from above, not allowing her to escape as he hit her.
Finally, Skillen broke free and contacted her mother using an iPad that was resting with barely any battery left. Her mother rushed to the scene and forced her way into the apartment, at which time McCourt ran off.
Skillen was rushed to the hospital, and her injuries were horrific.
McCourt was later arrested and sentenced to two years in prison for the assault. When he is released, he is not allowed to contact Skillen for five years and he will be monitored for eight months.
“During the incident I kept saying ‘Is it worth going to jail?’ and he said ‘I don’t care if I go to jail as long as you’re dead,'” Skillen said during his sentencing. “I remember thinking, he is trying to kill me. He is dangerous.”
